What is the precipitated calcium carbonate? Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is a calcium carbonate powder produced through chemical processing. It is white and odorless, with an average particle size of only 2–3 μm, a whiteness of 92%–95%, and high purity. Its sedimentation volume (2.4–2.8 mL/g) is greater than that of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) (1.1–1.9 mL/g), which is produced through mechanical grinding. It is a widely used inorganic filler in industrial applications.

Precipitated Calcium Carbonate Manufacturing Process

Step 1: Calcination: Limestone and fuel (such as coal) are fed into a rotary kiln or shaft kiln, where they are calcined at a high temperature of approximately 900–1,100°C to decompose the limestone into quicklime and carbon dioxide.
Step 2: Slaking: Quicklime is thoroughly mixed and reacted with water in a slaker to produce lime milk. The slaker is typically equipped with agitation and heat-retention functions to ensure the reaction is complete.
Step 3: Carbonation: The CO₂ generated during calcination is introduced into the lime milk, where it reacts to form calcium carbonate and water. Reaction conditions, such as temperature, concentration, and agitation speed, can be controlled to regulate the crystal structure and particle size of the calcium carbonate.
Step 4: Separation, Drying, Grinding, Packaging: After the carbonation, the slurry is dewatered, filtered, and washed to remove water and soluble impurities. It is then sent to a dryer for drying. The dried calcium carbonate may contain some agglomerates, so it is ground and sieved to obtain a final product with a uniform particle size before being packaged.
