Blast furnace slag is a kind of solid waste generated by steel plants during the iron-making process. When iron ore, coke, and fluxing agents are smelted at high temperatures in a blast furnace, the impurities in the iron ore combine with the fluxing agents to form molten slags. These slags float on the surface of the molten iron, after being discharged, undergo water quenching to form granulated blast furnace slag.
GGBS plant (ground granulated blast furnace slag plant), also known as GGBFS plant, is specially designed to further process granulated blast furnace slag into slag powder. It is the most crucial step in transforming granulated blast furnace slag from waste into a valuable resource. After processing, the slag powder can be sold as a product and applied in various industries.
Wide Application Of GGBS
Slag cement production: blast furnace slag powder can be used as a cement admixture to replace part of the cement clinker (20%-70%) in the production of slag silicate cement, enhancing the durability and sulfate resistance of the cement.
Concrete mixing: as a mineral admixture for concrete, blast furnace slag powder can improve the strength and durability of concrete. Each cubic meter of slag powder can replace 50 to 80 kg of cement, significantly reducing the cost.
Agricultural application: blast furnace slag powder can be applied to improve acidic soils, adjust the soil pH, enhance soil fertility and structure, and provide trace elements.
Road engineering: blast furnace slag powder is available in the production of pavement concrete to enhance the skid resistance and durability of the surface. It is also a subgrade stabilizer to improve the bearing capacity and stability of the subgrade.

Why Choose To Invest In GGBS Plant?
Easy obtained raw materials: global steel production is immense, and approximately 0.3-0.5 tons of blast furnace slags are generated for every ton of pig iron produced.
Broad product market: slag powder can be widely used in the construction industry, agriculture industry, road engineering, and environmental protection, ensuring a steady demand.
Low-price raw materials: since the production cost of blast furnace slag is already included in the steel manufacturing process, its price as a raw material is typically low.
Well-established production process: the grinding technology for blast furnace slag is highly mature and not complex, making it easy for new investors to get started.
Short payback period: typically, the initial investment can be recouped within 1 to 3 years.

GGBS Manufacturing Process
The production process of GGBS can be divided into two types: vertical mill finish grinding and ball mill and roller press combined grinding.

Vertical Mill Finish Grinding
The slag is first transported via a belt conveyor to the crusher for initial crushing. During the conveying process, the slag undergoes de-ironing and screening through a magnetic separator and vibrating screen. After the initial crushing, the slag is lifted into a vertical mill for grinding. The ground slag powder, aided by hot air from a hot blast stove, enters a powder separator for classification and is simultaneously dried. The slag powder that meets the fineness requirements is collected by a bag filter and transported via an air slide conveyor and elevator into the finished product silo. The slag powder that does not meet the requirements is returned to the vertical mill for further grinding.
Ball Mill & Roller Press Combined Grinding
The slag is first sent into a dryer for moisture removal by a belt conveyor. During the conveying process, the slag undergoes de-ironing and screening through a magnetic separator and vibrating screen. After that, the dried slag is fed into a roller press to be ground into slag powder. The slag powder is then lifted by a bucket elevator to a separator for classification. The slag powder with qualified particle size is conveyed by an air slide conveyor and elevator to a ball mill for further grinding. The coarse particles are returned to the roller press for re-grinding. A dust collector is installed at the discharge end of the ball mill, and the qualified slag powder collected by the dust collector is delivered to the finished product silo.

Vertical Mill Finish Grinding Systems Vs Ball Mill Combined Grinding Systems
Vertical mill finish grinding system and ball mill combined grinding system are currently the most efficient and commonly used slag grinding systems, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. AGICO offers customized solutions for both types of GGBS production systems.
Vertical Mill Finish Grinding System
The equipment is minimal, and under normal operating conditions, it produces low noise and minimal dust pollution (emission ≤ 30mg/Nm³).
5 major systems: feeding system, vertical roller mill, finished powder classification system, finished powder collection system, and finished powder conveying system.
Small footprint, saving more than 30% of the area compared to the ball mill combined grinding system.
Energy savings of 30-60% (system power consumption is 36 kWh/t).
Adjustable powder fineness and the ability to separately grind different types of materials, such as cement clinker, etc.
By equipping a hot air system, the material drying process can be completed inside the mill, and the use of recirculating air also improves heat utilization efficiency.
System operating rate: 93% – 97%.
Ball Mill Combined Grinding System
Strong material adaptability, large specific surface area, and powder particle shape superior to that of vertical mill finish grinding systems.
7 major systems: feeding system, roller press, semi-finished powder classification system, closed-circuit ball mill, finished powder classification system, finished powder collection system, and finished powder conveying system.
There are many pieces of equipment, so the system occupies a larger area. However, dust emissions are controllable, at ≤ 30mg/Nm³.
System power consumption is 80 kWh/t.
Adjustable product fineness and the ability to separately grind different types of materials, such as cement clinker, etc.
The drying process cannot be completed inside the mill and requires additional drying equipment.
System operating rate: 85% – 95%.
