The dead burnt magnesite kiln, also called the DBM kiln, is an industrial furnace specifically used for high-temperature calcination of magnesite. Its purpose is to decompose the magnesium carbonate (MgCO₃) in the magnesite into magnesium oxide (MgO) while removing carbon dioxide (CO₂). This process is typically carried out at high temperatures (above 1500°C) to ensure the production of high-purity and high-density magnesium oxide products, which can be applied in refractory materials, metallurgy, construction materials, and other fields.
AGICO is a professional kiln solution supplier with more than 30 years of experience. We offer two production solutions for dead burnt magnesite: the rotary kiln solution and the vertical kiln solution. In addition to dead-burned magnesite kilns, our caustic calcined magnesite kilns are also one of our best-selling products. Both solutions are designed to meet the varying needs of our customers, providing flexible and efficient options for magnesia production.
| Performance | Rotary Kiln | Vertical Kiln |
| Product Uniformity | Excellent (suitable for high-purity MgO) | Medium (suitable for standard-grade MgO) |
| Temperature Control | Precise (adjustable temperature by zones) | Rather Difficult (depending on the air current distribution) |
| Product Activity | High | Slightly Lower |
| Output | Large (>100,000 tons per year) | Slightly Small (10,000-50,000 tons per year) |
| Raw Material Adaptability | Wide (powder or block raw materials) | Limited (block raw materials required) |
| Energy Consumption | Relatively High (thermal efficiency 40%-50%) | Relatively Low (thermal efficiency 50%-60%) |
| Advantages | Suitable for large-scale continuous production, stable product quality, and high active MgO content | Low investment, high thermal efficiency, suitable for medium and small capacity demands |
| Disadvantages | High investment (complex equipment), high energy consumption, high maintenance costs | Poor calcination uniformity, lower product consistency, and high environmental pressure |
In addition to the kilns, we also provide auxiliary equipment needed for the production of dead burnt magnesite, such as coolers, dust collectors, etc. If you are interested, please let us know your fuel type, output needs, production location, and other detailed information. We will promptly respond with the equipment configuration and a detailed quotation.
How To Select The Kiln?
Rotary kiln available:
Demand for high-activity dead burnt magnesite (e.g., for the refractory materials and chemical industries);
Large-scale and continuous production (annual capacity of 100,000 tons or more);
Raw materials are powdered ore or require a flexible adjustment of the calcination process.
Vertical kiln available:
Medium to small-scale production (annual capacity of 10,000 to 50,000 tons);
The raw material is lump magnesite ore (particle size 20~80mm);
Sensitive to investment costs, with lower requirements for product reactivity.
Why Choose To Invest In The Production Of Dead Burnt Magnesite?
Resource & Cost Advantages: The global magnesite reserves are abundant, approximately 1.3 billion tons, distributed across regions such as Asia, Europe, the Americas, etc. Investments can leverage local resources to reduce logistics costs.
High Processing Value-added: The price of raw ore (magnesite) is approximately $50-100 per ton, while after processing into DBM (dead-burned magnesia), it can reach $300-800 per ton (depending on purity), significantly increasing the profit margin.
Continuous Market Demand Growth: Global steel production has been increasing year by year (reaching 1.885 billion tons in 2023), with approximately 15 kg of refractory materials required for every ton of crude steel produced. DBM, as the primary raw material for magnesia-based refractories, is directly linked to this demand. Additionally, DBM itself is non-polluting, aligning with the trend of green manufacturing. Furthermore, there is also significant demand for high-purity DBM in applications such as waste incinerators and aerospace high-temperature components.
Long-term Benefits: Even during economic downturns, the rigid demand for refractory materials in basic industries like steel production remains, making DBM indispensable. Additionally, high-quality magnesite is a non-renewable resource, and in the long run, its price is expected to rise.

Highlights Of AGICO Dead Burnt Magnesite Kiln
AGICO uses advanced kiln structures (such as rotary kilns or vertical kilns) and insulating materials to reduce heat loss, resulting in a 20%-30% decrease in energy consumption compared to traditional kilns. We also utilize flue gas waste heat to preheat raw materials or generate electricity, further reducing energy consumption.
The AGICO kiln precisely adjusts the temperature inside through an automated control system (caustic calcining at approximately 700-1000°C, dead burning up to 1600-1800°C), ensuring the magnesium oxide activity and the uniformity of sintering density. The materials are evenly heated, preventing local overburning or underburning, and the product purity can reach 90%-95%.
Our dead burnt magnesite kiln is equipped with desulfurization, denitrification, and dust removal systems to meet stringent environmental standards (such as China’s ultra-low emission or EU standards). Some models also support CO₂ capture technology to address carbon emissions.
The entire process, from feeding, calcination to discharging, is fully automated, reducing manual intervention and improving stability. It supports IoT technology, allowing real-time monitoring of kiln operation data, providing early fault warnings, and optimizing the process.
The AGICO kiln can process magnesite with varying grades (MgO content of 40%-47%) or particle sizes and is even compatible with tailings recycling. By adjusting parameters, the same equipment can produce both caustic calcined magnesia and dead-burned magnesia.
